Crypto International AG
Successor to Crypto AG

Crypto International AG, or CIAG, is a Swiss manufacturer of cryptographic and communications equipment, and a provider of cyber security services, based in Steinhausen (Switzerland). It is the successor to Crypto AG – the company founded by Boris Hagelin in 1952 – since 1 February 2018.

Crypto International AG is owned by the Swedish cyber security entrepreneur Andreas Linde, who took over the portfolio of Crypto AG (Hagelin) on 1 February 2018. For an overview of historical and legacy products, please refer to our Crypto AG page or visit the company's website below.

Operation RUBICON
On 11 February 2020, the German, Swiss and American press revealed that the predecessor of Crypto International AG — Crypto AG (Hagelin) — had been owned and operated since 1970 by the German intelligence Service Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), as part of a secret operation codenamed RUBICON. Although the BND had left the operation in 1994, the CIA stayed with it until the assets were sold to Linde in 2018 [1].

Shortly after the revelation of Operation RUBICON, the Swiss Government announced that pending a formal investigation, the export licence of Crypto International AG had been suspended. This is strange, as it had nothing to do with the old Crypto AG. In the first week of March, the police raided the offices of Crypto International AG in Steinhausen (Switzerland) to secure evidence, awaiting a formal SECO investigation [2].

On 3 July 2020, the Swiss newspaper Neue Züricher Zeitung (NZZ) announced that Crypto International was about to lay off 83 of its 85 staff, which was effectively the entire workforce [3]. It seems likely that the two owners – Andreas and Emma Linde – were the only two remaining employees. It is currently unknown whether they will be taking legal steps against the former owners or the former directors of the old (now liquidated) Crypto AG.

Asperiq AG
On 21 August 2020, the Swiss newspaper Tagesanzeiger revealed that after the announcement of the mass layoffs, on 4 July 2020, the company owners – Andreas and Emma Linde – had registered a new company with the Swiss Chamber of Commerce, named Asperiq AG [4]. The registration became effective on 7 August 2020 [5]. It is likely that Asperiq AG is affiliated with the Swedish Asperiq Group AB – founded in 2017 – as it is als owned by the Linde family.
