Crypto Museum invites researchers and scholars
in the Netherlands to submit a proposal for
the Kerckhoffs Stimulus Grant (KSB). The grant is named after
Auguste Kerckhoffs, a Dutch linguist and cryptographer who became famous
for his fundamental priciples of cryptography; principles that remain
foundational to the field today.
These principles encompass, amoung other things, the mathematical
robustness of a cryptosystem alongside the complete openness of the algorithm employed.
Up to two KSBs are awarded annually. Once granted, the project duration will
be one, two or three years, depending on the complexity and relevance of the
proposal.

Crypto Museum nodigt onderzoekers in Nederland

The Kerckhoffs Stimulus Grant (KSB) was initiated on 1 oktober 2026.
Although the conditions state that proposals have to be submitted before
the end of June, an exception has been made for the first year.
Over the course of 2026, Crypto Museum has received several informal
submissions for a grant, and the Museum Trust Board has meanwhile
reviewed all submissions.

It is our pleasure to announce that the first KSB has been awarded to
Stijn Maatje for his research into (historical) backdoors. Stijn completed his
MSc at the University of Amsterdam (UvA)
last year, and is currently doing a PhD on the same subject at
Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI).
The Grant is for two years (2026-2027), with a total value of EUR 5,000.
Congratulations!
Stijn received the award on 4 November 2026 from Crypto Museum's
Marc Simons (left) and Paul Reuvers (right), during a special opening day
of the exhibition Secret Communications 5 for students
of the University of Amsterdam.
