For more than 20 years, author H. Keith Melton
– himself an avid collector of clandestine radios,
cameras
and other spy gear – has been working on a book
that would reveal the secret history of
(subminiature) cameras that were
developed in the former Soviet Union (USSR)
during the Cold War.
Many of these cameras were used by
secret intelligence services
like the KGB
and the GRU.
And his efforts are now paying off. With the help of KGB experts
like Lt. Col. Vladimir Alekseenko, Col. Levshin Nikolai and Col. Nikolaev Vladimir
Ivanovich, complemented by contributions from German Cold War expert
Detlev Vreisleben, Lithuanian museum curator Julius Urbaitis, and many
others, Melton and co-author Hasco have succeeded in compiling the
most comprehensive overview of secret KGB spy cameras to date.

This hard-cover book is slightly larger than A4, is well typeset and has
a pleasant writing style. It contains more than 400 high-resolution full-colour
photographs, diagrams and illustrations, including illustrations from original KGB
instruction manuals.
The book covers more than 80 spy cameras and camera systems, many
of which have never been seen by the general public before.
The book contains eleven chapters, each of which handles a different
field; document copying, surveillance, compromise, covert photography, etc.,
complete with the history of its development, manufacturers, etc.
The last section of the book contains a long cross reference index with
model numbers and (code) names.
It is clearly the most comprehensive compilation of Soviet covert
cameras to date, and will no doubt be the reference for the next
few decades. It is a must-have for anyone interested in historic cameras
or in the history of the Cold War.
Highly recommended.
