TH-4179
Telegraphy radio adapter

TH-4179 is an adapter unit (Dutch: aanpassingseenheid) for connecting telegraphy equipment to a radio set, developed in the early 1970s by Telefunken in Germany. The device was used by the Dutch Army for connection of an Ecolex X telegraphy (telex) encryptor to an RT-3600 radio set.

The TH-4179 was commonly used in combination with the TH-3676 FSK modem, also developed by telefunken. It is a passive device, in that it does not require a power source. It connects to the TH-3676 via two or four wires, and also provides the push-to-talk (PTT) function, allowing the Ecolex X to select between TX and RX.

The device is inserted between the RT-3600 radio and its handset. A fixed cable is present for connection to the handset socket of the RT-3600 radio, whilst the handset is connected to the U-229 receptacle at the front panel.

The TH-4179 is typically required in case (encrypted) telegraphy has to be sent over half-duplex two-way radio systems. In such systems, the user normally presses the push-to-talk switch (PTT) on the handset, to switch over from reception to transmission. The TH-4179 allows an external encryption device to take over this function. In addition, a switch at the front panel of the TH-4179 allows selection between the handset (TFN) and telegraphy (encryption) equipment (TGF).

Setup
The diagram below shows a typical setup with the TH-4179 (here shown in blue). The fixed cable of the TH-4179 (stowed behind a hinged panel) should be connected to the radio set (instead of the handset), whilst the handset is connected to the U-229 receptacle at the centre of the front panel. The four black banana sockets at the left of the front panel, should be connected (one-on-one) to the four black banana sockets at the right of the front panel of the TH-3676 FSK modem.

The telegraphy equipment — for example a Siemens T-100 teleprinter — is connected to the TH-3676 FSK modem. When a telex encryptor such as the Philips Ecolex X is present, it is connected in between the teleprinter (T-100) and the TH-3676 modem. It takes over the PTT function.

Connections
Ecolex X
The diagram below shows how the TH-4179 should be connected when it is used to connect a Philips Ecolex X telex encryptor to an RT-3600 VHF/FM radio. The TH-4179 is at the far right. Its fixed cable is connected to one of the U229 connectors of the RT-3600, whilst the handset is connected to the U229 connector at the front panel of the TH-4179.  More information
