Formerly DRS Technologies, Inc.
DRS Technologies Inc (DRS) is a US-based manufacturer of rugged equipment
for the Department of Defence (DoD). The company started life in 1968
as Diagnostic/Retrieval Systems Inc when it was founded by Leonard Newman
and David Gross, two engineers working for Loral Corporation [1].
The company went public in 1981 and has since expanded its turnover
through a series of aquisitions and mergers,
from a mere $58 million in 1994 to more than $1 billion in 2004.
In 2003, DRS acquired the legacy of the former
WJ Communications (Watkins-Johnson, W-J), when it took over
Marconi North America. This included the line of surveillance and test
receivers, that had been sold to Marconi as the CEI business unit.
It is still part of DRS' product portfolio today.
In 2008, DRS was acquired by the Italian multinational
Finmeccania (now: Leonardo) conglomerate.
Until 2012, Marc Newman (the son of founder Leonard Newman) was CEO of the
company, which continues to operate under its orginal name to this day, with
the subtitle A Finmeccanica Company from 2008 onwards.
After a global restructuring of the parent company in 2016, the name of
the latter was changed to Leonardo and the subtitle was changed
accordingly to a LEONARDO company.
Since April 2017, DRS has been trading under the name Leonardo DRS.
