International Telecommunication Union
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is a
specialised agency of the United Nations (UN). It is responsible for
matters related to information and communication technologies.
It was established on 17 May 1865 as the International Telegraph Union;
the first formal and permanent international organisation, and was
integrated with the newly established UN in 1947.
The ITU comprises three Sectors, that are listed below.
The organisation has its headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland), and has
six regional offices and seven area offices around the world.
There are five administrative regions.
The global membership of the organisation
includes 194 countries and ~ 900 businesses,
academic institutions and international and regional organisations.

Telecommunication regions

The three telecommunications regions of the ITU are organised as follows:

ITU-R Radio communication ITU-T Standardization ITU-D Development
|

Established in 1927 as the International Radio Consultative Committee (CCIR). 1
It manages the international radio frequency spectrum and satellite orbit
resources. In 1992, the CCIR became the ITU-R. Its Secretariat is the
Radiocommunication Bureau. For radio-related regulations, it has divided
the world into three telecommunication regions, as illustrated
in the map above.

ITU-T is the Standardization Sector of the ITU. It was established in
1993, when the CCITT 1 was integrated with the ITU.
It is responsible for coordinating many international standards for
telecommunications and Information Communication Technology, such as
X.509 for cybersecurity, Y.3172 and Y.3173 for machine learning (ML),
and H.264/MPEG-4 AVC for video compression.

ITU-D is the Development sector of the ITU. It was established in 1992,
and is responsible for spreading equitable, sustainable and affordable
access to information and communication technologies (ICT).
It also provides the Secretariat for the Broadband Commission for
Sustainable Development and the Partner2Connect Digital Alliance.
