Wavecom Elektronik AG

Wavecom Elektronik AG, also: Wavecom Nachrichtentechnik or Wavecom, 1 is a Swiss manufacturer of high-end systems and software for retrieval of wireless communication in all frequency bands in a variety of formats, headquartered in Bülach (near Zürich, Switzerland). It was founded in 1985 in Hohentengen (Germany) by Christian Kesselring, a former employee of Poly-Elektronik in Switzerland. He used the first three years for the development of the W4010. In 1991, when the non-competition clause with Poly-Elektronik had ended, he relocated to Switzerland.

Wavecom develops and builds systems for monitoring radio signals, today known as waveforms, including Frequency-Shift Keying (FSK) traffic and other forms of digital telegraphy, using analogue as well as digital communication modes. Wavecom systems are typically used by radio monitoring services, law enforcement agencies and intelligence services, both civil and military.

The image above shows the Wavecom building in Bülach around 2012. The company and its antennas are located at the top floor. There is a 3.7 m and a 2.4 m dish, a Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) log-periodic (LogPer) antenna mounted on a mast, and several VHF/UHF and active antennas.

The company's first product, the W4010 (1987-1996) was one of the first microprocessor-based FSK decoders, offering support for ~30 communication modes. Connections for a printer and a video monitor, along with the possibility of EPROM upgrades, made it a very successful product. Although it was discontinued in 1996, it is still in use today by radio amateurs and hobbyists.

It's successors, the W4100 and the W4010DSP (1993-2001) supported around 100 communication modes, some of which were classified at the time. Exclusively for professional customers, a software training was offered which allowed them to program their own 'special' modes. The video monitor was not only used for displaying decoded texts, but also graphics and the trackball-controlled user interface. It became a serious competitor for the Rohde & Schwarz GA-082 and was used for more sophisticated applications by intelligence services and the military worldwide.

  1. WAVECOM is the registered trademark. Not to be confused with the former French company Wavecom, which is known for its wireless communication modules. The latter was taken over in 2009 by Sierra Wireless [3].
