AOR
The device has the look and feel of a regular two-way handheld transceiver,
but is in fact a general coverage all-mode scanning receiver that can hold
up to 1000 channels divided over 20 banks in its non-volatile memory.
In addition it has space for 1000 lock-out frequencies (i.e. channels that
must be ignored during scanning), and one continuously checked priority channel.
AR-8000 is suitable for the reception of signals in AM, FM, USB,
LSB and CW waveforms (modes), but also for reception of Wideband
FM (WFM) stations in the 88-108 MHz broadcast band.

At the time of its introduction (1994), the AOR AR-8000 was one of the fastest
and most versatile general coverage all-mode handheld scanners on the market.
Two years later, in 1996, competitor Icom launched the competing
IC-R10
with similar specifications, but a much lower scanning speed.
Both devices were used by amateur radio operators and
scanner enthusiasts, but also by various
government agencies for intercepting and analysing nearby
two-way radio traffic and for finding
covert listening devices (bugs), in most cases
alongside other TSCM equipment.

The image below provides a quick overview of the controls and connections
of the AR-8000. At the front is a 20-button backlit keypad and a backlit
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). Above the display is a loudspeaker.
At the top of the device are buttons for volume and squelch control, plus
a rotary dial for channel and frequency selection. Also at the top are
sockets for antenna (50Ω BNC) and a 3.5 mm jack for the earphone.
When used, it disables the internal speaker.
Four additional push-buttons are located at the left side. They are
positioned in such a way that they can easily be operated with the thumb, when
held in the left hand. The upper button (FUNC) must be pushed to allow
selection of the alternative functions, printed in red on the key tops.
The AR8000 is powered by four 1.5V AA-size dry batteries, or by the four
1.2V rechargable NiCd cells that were
supplied with the device. They can be charged with the supplied mains AC
adapter that should be connected to the power socket at the right side.
When fully charged, the batteries allow several hours of uninterrupted
operation. It can be used when charging is on progress.

The device has an embedded serial port that allows it to be controlled
remotely from a personal computer (PC) or another device, such as an
Optoelectronics Scout or Xplorer,
for reaction tuning. The Scout is a logging frequency
counter that locks on nearby transmitters only, and then automatically tunes
the AR-8000 to the desirect frequency so that the conversation can be monitored.
Xplorer is a near-field interceptor, that
can detect and demodulate RF signals in its vicinity. When a signal is detected,
it sends the frequency to the AR-8000, so that it can be monitored from
a greater distance.
To interface with such devices, the (internally hidden)
serial port must be brought out,
which is done by installing a modified battery lid and the
special cable shown in the images below.
The white end of the cable is
inserted into the slot in the battery lid
and then pressed down until it binds with the header inside the device.
It is held in place by a piece of velcro.
