USA NATO SINCGARS Batteries
6V backup battery
BA-5372, also known under different names and with a different chemical
composition, is a 6V non-chargeable military battery, used by a variety of
(military) devices and ancilaries for operation and/or backup purposes.
It is typically used in encryption devices
– particularly in voice and data encryptors
and in fill devices – to retain encryption keys in static
volatile memory (CMOS).
|
The dimensions and physical apperance of the batteries vary wildly between
manfuacturers, but the outer dimensions are 31.5 × 16.8 mm in all cases.
Another parameter that varies between manufacturers is the voltage.
Although this is specified at 6V, some are 7.5V.
Always check whether this is allowed for your equipment.
A major disadvantage of this battery is the fact that it is manufactured
in the US and that due to its chemical composition — it contains
lithium or mercury — it cannot be shipped via airmail. As a result, these
batteries are hard to get in Europe.
|
|
|
Another disadvantage is the high price, which typically ranges between
40 and 70 US$ (2024).
Note that — unlike with regular batteries — the tip is the (-) contact,
and the flat-faced side is the (+) contact. If there are two flat
sides (i.e. no tip), check the engravings on the flat surfaces.

The dimensions and physical apperance of the batteries vary wildly between
manfuacturers, but the outer dimensions are 31.5 × 16.8 mm in all cases.
This is done to ensure that the battery fits the battery compartment of
the device in which it's installed. There are also some minimum contact
diameters to ensure proper conductance.
The diagram below shows the regular dimensions.
