Telegraphy Cipher Machine

Cryptel 245 was a cipher machine for telegraphy signals (telex),
with a built-in electronic key generator, developed by
Standard Telefon og Kabelfabrik A/S (STK)
in Norway in 1967. It was based on the earlier Cryptel 240,
was better built but had a less powerful crypto-algorithm.

The reason for giving the machine a less strong cipher, is that its
predecessor, the Cryptel 240 was so powerful that the
Norwegian government didn't want the machine to be sold commercially.
STK then decided to use a less powerful crypto-algorithm for the
Cryptel 245, making it much more suitable for civil applications.
The machine was reasonably successful and aprox.
400 units were built an sold in the following years.
The machine was succeeded in 1978 by the military
RACE (KL-51) and its civil counterpart
the Cryptel 265.
