Ran Data Corporation Ltd.
Ran Data Corporation, commonly abbreviated to RanData or RDC,
was an Australian technology and mining company,
that existed from 13 December 1984 to 26 July 1990.
The company was initially established by the Italian entrepreneur
A.J. Monte Sala.
In the mid-1980s, the electronics company was involved in the development of graphics
display systems and encryption devices.
RanData was established as RanData Pty Ltd. in 1982, after Monte Sala
had developed a secure encryption device for the consumer market. The
company was later bought by Caris Corporation, and renamed Ran Data
Corporation in 1984. In the late 1980s, Sala was prevented from exporting
one of his encryption devices to Pakistan, and the
CIA block a joint venture
between his company and Crypto AG
in Switzerland. After RanData came under
investigation for stock manipulation in 1987, the product line was taken over
by GSA Technology Ltd. in Hawthorn (Victoria, Australia).
As RanData equipment was neither under control of the
Defence Signals Directorate (DSD)
– the Australian cryptologic organisation –
nor the American
Central Intelligence Agency (CIA),
their products should be considered to have been secure at the time.
