Gretacoder 104
Speech scrambler

Gretacoder 104, abbreviated GC-104, is a voice scrambler for mobile (military) applications, sold in the early 1980s by Gretag in Regensdorf (Switzerland) as an OEM product. Contrary to most other Gretag encryption products, the unit was not manufactured by Gretag, but by Telsy in Italy.

The Gretacoder 104 is housed in a ruggedized green metal case, making it suitable for use in harse environments, such as military vehicles.

Being a voice scrambler, it is less secure than true (digital) encryption, but has the advantage that the scrambled signal stays within the bandwidth of the channel. The device has two modes: time domain and two-dimensional scrambling. The latter uses a mixture of time domain and frequency domain scrambling. The GC-104 is compatible with the GC-103 telephone scrambler, but not with other Gretag scramblers.

The device is inteded for use in two-way radio circuits, and is therefore suitable for half-duplex traffic only. The Gretacoder 104 (GC-104) is identical to the Telsy TDS 2004M. For further information and additional photographs, please refer to our page about the Telsy TDS 2004M. The GC-104 is the military variant of the Gretacoder 103 (GC-103) telephone scrambler. Both voice scramblers were built by Telsy with whom Gretag had a very good relationship [3].
