Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD) 1
This pages gives an overview of the cipher machines that were used in
Germany in the period before, during and after World War II.
Note that from 1949 to 1990, East-Germany was separated from
West-Germany and became known as the Deutsche Demokratische Republik
(German Democratic Republic) or DDR and is dealt with on a
separate page.
Immediately after WWII, Germany was not allowed to develop its own high-end
cipher machines, but this was dropped gradually over time.
Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Germany was
reunited in 1990 and is now known as the Bundesrepublik Deutschland
(BRD). 1
