Oder
Opto-electronic voice transceiver - this page is a stub

Oder was the name of a never-released optical light-based communication device (German: Lichtsprechgerät), developed by Carl Zeiss in Jena (DDR) for the repressive East-German intelligence service MfS (Stasi). It was intended as the successor to the JO-4.02 (Große Dahme), and had a larger primary mirror, as a result of which the operational range would be longer.

The image on the right shows the primary mirror of the device, which has a diameter of 195 mm. It is clearly a prototype, as the surface does not yet have its infrared coating. It has a fairly shorty focal length of 340 mm and an opening ratio of 1:1.7. It is likely that a secondary convex mirror was used to extend the focal length.

Many thanks to Karsten Hansky [1] for allowing us to photograph the prototype primary mirror of the 'Oder' device.
