UK Tactical Radio System
Larkspur was the name of a radio system used by the British Armed Forces.
It was developed in the late 1940s as a replacement for the WWII legacy
radios and was therefore sometimes called the new range.
Larkspur was designed according to specifications layed out by the
Signals Research and Development Establishment (SRDE) in
Christchurch (UK) and consisted of a series of HF and VHF radios,
some of which were based on American and Canadian designs.
The first experiments were carried out in the mid-1950s and the
system came into service in the 1960s.
From the early 1970s onwards, Larkspur was gradually being replaced
by the new Clansman Combat Net Radio system (CNR)
that was also developed by the SRDE. Nevertheless, some individual
Larkspur radio have been in use wel into the 1980s.
Many Larkspur radios have since become available on the surplus market
and now in the hands of collectors and radio amateurs.
